Kangien Historical Site

A private academy established by Hirose Tanso, a Confucian scholar of the late Edo period. Over 5,000 students graduated from across Japan, contributing to the modernization of Japan. Visitors can tour the thatched-roof Akifu-an where Tanso resided in his later years.

Mameda Town

An area preserving the atmosphere of the Edo period when it prospered as a castle town directly controlled by the shogunate ("Tenryo"), with earthen storehouses and latticed windows. Buildings with white earthen walls remain, offering a retro atmosphere perfect for leisurely strolling.

Hita Gion Yamahoko Museum

The Hita Gion Yamahoko Festival was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. During the festival held on the weekend after July 20th each year, nine gorgeously decorated yamahoko floats parade through the streets of Hita.

Tenryo Hita Museum

Displays approximately 100 items including paintings, calligraphy, and ancient documents telling the story of the era when Hita was under direct shogunate control (Tenryo). *One wheelchair is available for rental.

Onta Pottery Museum

A museum where you can learn about the history, characteristics, and techniques of Onta pottery. Ancient pottery and other works are also on display.

Kusano Honke (National Important Cultural Property)

Nationally designated Important Tangible Cultural Property. Oita Prefecture's oldest merchant house, operating a wax refining business from 1688 (Genroku 1) until the end of the Meiji era under the trade name Masuya. In the 220-year-old reception room, 178 hina dolls are displayed, with the palatial hina set of 42 dolls being particularly spectacular.

Ohara Hachiman Shrine

A Hachiman shrine of considerable scale in the prefecture, enshrining Empress Jingu, Emperor Ojin, and Himegami. The gate tower, the oldest structure in the precincts, was built in 1687, while the worship hall, offering hall, and main hall are said to have been constructed in 1794.

Chofukuji Temple

Shounzan Chofukuji is a temple of the Shinshu Otani sect (head temple: Higashi Honganji) located in the center of Mameda-machi, Hita City (Traditional Buildings Preservation District). It was founded in 1584 by Souei.

Gakurinji Temple

A famous spot known as the Ten Scenes of Gakurinji. The temple displays various historical art treasures designated as prefectural cultural properties, including Buddhist statues, paintings, calligraphy, and ancient documents passed down from Gakurinji Temple, which was built in 1342 by imperial decree of Emperor Go-Daigo.

Takatsuka Jizo

Known as a rare Jizo statue that preserves the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, Takatsuka Atago Jizo is believed to be highly efficacious for fulfilling various wishes, attracting many worshippers throughout the year.

Hita Yakisoba

The main characteristic of Hita Yakisoba is the noodles grilled on a hot plate until partly crispy. They are then mixed with crunchy bean sprouts, green onions, pork, and other ingredients, and cooked with a special sauce that varies by restaurant.


Hita Sushi

Hitan Sushi is a healthy vegetable sushi unique to Hita, centered on takana (leaf mustard) rolls and featuring vegetables and fruits from the Hita area.

Oyama Dam

Oyama Dam was built on the Akaishi River, a tributary of the Chikugo River. Hita City's Oyama Town is the hometown of manga artist Hajime Isayama, and the downstream plaza features bronze statues of the main characters with the dam wall representing Wall Maria from Attack on Titan, recreating "the place where everything began."

Yabakei

Yabakei is a scenic area in Nakatsu City, neighboring Hita City, known as one of Japan's Three Great Scenic Oddities. Numerous spectacular views are scattered throughout, where you can enjoy the colors of each season. Especially during autumn foliage season, many visitors come.

Kameyama Park

A verdant park centered around Hinokuma Mountain, one of Hita's three hills. It is a waterfront scenic area adjacent to the Mikuma River.

Taketa Park

Pleasure Boats (Yakata-bune)

Hita hot spring inns are characterized by offering dinner on yakata-bune (pleasure boats) and cormorant fishing. In summer, tatami-mat boats go out seeking coolness; in autumn, admiring the harvest moon; and in winter, enjoying hot pot on snow-viewing boats equipped with shoji screens and kotatsu is one of the refined pleasures. This has become a seasonal tradition of Hita.

Taio Gold Mine

Taio Gold Mine once boasted the largest gold production in the Orient. It is an underground museum recreating the conditions of that era and is designated as a national Heritage of Industrial Modernization. At the adjacent Michi-no-Eki Taio Kinzan, you can purchase local products and dine.

Tenryo Hina Palace
